Education – Writing “Thylacine Short Story”

Created: Monday, 03 June 2013 00:00

Write a short story from “Benjamin’s” point of view. Who was Benjamin?

Benjamin was the last recorded Tasmanian Tiger. Benjamin died in 1936 at the Hobart Zoo and extensive searches since then have failed to provide evidence that the Thylacine still exists in the wild. Robert Paddle “The Last Tasmanian Tiger” 2000 pages 198 – 201 claims that the name Benjamin surfaced during a newspaper interview with Mr Frank Darcy in 1968 who then claimed to be its keeper. His credentials according to Paddle ‘do not stand up’ and it was here that the mythical name of Benjamin was born and it has become part of the dialog of recent writers ever since.
Look at the photograph of Benjamin the last Tasmanian Tiger (who was really a female thylacine). Write a short story from her point of view – “Caged and Alone, the Last of Your Kind”.
